George Foster is a multi-instrumentalist whose lifelong journey in music began at age six on piano, followed by drums at eleven and guitar at thirteen. By sixteen, he discovered his true musical voice on the bass, the instrument that would become his signature. As a teenager, George immersed himself in progressive rock and jazz fusion, performing in a band with his brothers Charles (guitar) and Roger (drums), alongside keyboardist Mark Swartzentruber, who now has an international career as a concert pianist. Those formative years shaped George’s versatility, musical instincts, and deep sense of groove.
He has performed and recorded as a keyboardist, guitarist, bassist, percussionist, songwriter, and vocalist. He’s brought technical precision and melodic inspiration to a wide spectrum of musical styles and enjoyed collaborations with top-notch artists including jam sessions with Artimus Pyle, who later became the drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Beyond the stage, George is an internationally recognized, award-winning book cover designer, having created artwork for almost two thousand titles for major publishers, including projects for Pope Francis and the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. His visual artistry plays a central role in Commotion as well. He is the creative force behind the band’s graphic identity, logos, and much of its website imagery and visual branding.
With Commotion, George provides the rock-solid bass foundation and backing vocals that help define the band’s sound, while also contributing what bandmates unanimously agree are his most critical assets: effortless cool, movie-star looks, and hair that somehow remains perfect under stage lights.
